Background

All of the trustees are, or have been, active for many years as members and volunteers of organizations whose primary focus is on education. Our contributions to these groups have been through thousands of volunteer hours as well as direct financial support. Until 2009, our personal charitable giving was to Canadian charities including medical charities and several Canadian universities. However, as our travels broadened to include visits to some of the poorer countries of the world, and as Alexandra Thomas became involved with Engineers Without Borders, we began to think that perhaps a more international approach to our charitable giving was warranted.

In 2009 we received a copy of the Gifts of Hope catalog from Plan Canada. We supported the Girls' School Residence in Tanzania project as our major charitable donation in 2009. And aferwards we thought "Wouldn't it be great if we could contribute to a similar project every year?".

Our desire to make an ongoing contribution led to the establishment of the Viaduct Foundation.
